Organization uses the C-SATS platform to support learning and improvement.
AdventHealth, one of the United States’ largest faith-based health-care systems, will extend its partnership with C-SATS to continue using the learning platform to track surgical performance and refine minimally invasive and robotic surgical skills for clinicians.
The C-SATS platform, a learning community for surgeons, helps AdventHealth’s commitment to providing the latest advancements in robotic surgical performance improvement while maintaining high quality and patient safety standards.
In 2017, AdventHealth was the first health system in the country to deploy C-SATS as a continuous quality improvement initiative through its federally listed patient safety organization (AdventHealth PSO), which provides quality and patient safety improvement programs for the health system. Since then, AdventHealth’s adoption and engagement rates among surgeons have exceeded national benchmarks across its 17 hospital campuses currently using the program.
“The high usage among surgeons shows that they see value in the C-SATS program for both themselves and their patients,” said Stephen Knych, chief medical officer for AdventHealth Fish Memorial, who also leads the system’s Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery Task Force, as well as its C-SATS initiative. “We are called to uphold the highest standards in providing safe, compassionate care, and to continually enhance the already high level of safety and quality in our robotic surgery program; to these ends, C-SATS helps our team deliver exceptional care.”
Using the platform, AdventHealth surgeons can capture their robotic surgical procedures on video and securely send them to C-SATS, which then facilitates a process to provide anonymous, personalized, and near-real-time reviews to each surgeon. Evaluations that incorporate machine learning are supplemented by human insights to create personalized and private dashboards for each surgeon. Telementoring sessions, expert case studies, and other resources are also available to support surgeons.
With the expansion of the partnership, AdventHealth will be incorporating a number of new tools, including a leadership outcomes dashboard, operative time metrics, and a surgeon proficiency model framework that provides an analysis of real-world data such as electronic health records and administrative billing data. C-SATS complies with the applicable Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) standards to ensure patient confidentiality.
“It is clear to me that this collaborative work with C-SATS over the last three years has delivered a significant amount of value to our surgeons, the broader AdventHealth organization and most importantly, the patients we serve,” said Mark K. Soliman, system chair of colorectal surgery for the AdventHealth Central Florida Division. “I am thrilled that we are furthering our partnership with C-SATS.”
To date, nearly 200 surgeons have voluntarily uploaded approximately 6,000 surgical videos for review.
Huzefa Neemuchwala, C-SATS digital surgery solutions, said, “AdventHealth’s continued engagement with C-SATS demonstrates the health system’s steadfast commitment to its surgeons and quality of care for patients. We are inspired by long-standing partners like AdventHealth and greatly appreciate the trust and value the organization places in our platform as an integral part of the surgeon’s continuous learning journey.”
