Team converges in Maryland, U.S., for five days of service and outreach.
An Adventist Young Professionals (AYP) team recently returned from a transformative mission trip to the Washington, DC, area, where they were able to make a significant impact on the local community through two key initiatives: revitalization of a key community facility, and fostering meaningful personal connections on the National Mall.
This five-day gathering brought together passionate individuals from the Adventist Church’s Columbia Union Conference and the North American Division.
Revitalizing Community Facilities
A primary focus of the mission trip was assisting in the improvement of a pivotal local community facility. An extension of the local church and serving individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those of Korean and Asian descent, the outdoor recreation area hosts a wide range of community events.
Through upgrades and beautification efforts, AYP was able to create a more welcoming and engaging space for families to gather, strengthen their bonds, and contribute to the continuation of community growth and well-being.
“This project was a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the power of AYP,” ByoungMoon Kim, associate pastor of Washington-Spencerville Korean Church, said. “Thanks to the many individuals who participated through volunteering and support, our church can now make [an even more] positive impact on the local community. I am very proud of the achievements made through this project and extend our deepest gratitude to God and to everyone involved. I look forward to continuing to spread this positive influence in the future.”
Fostering Personal Connections on the National Mall
In addition to their work on the facility, the mission team members also spent time on the National Mall, engaging with visitors and local residents in a meaningful way. Activities included distributing literature, offering prayers, and actively listening to the stories and needs of those they encountered.
At David’s Tent, a music ministry based on the Mall, the team also had the opportunity to lead in worship, singing, and additional prayer, cultivating a space for enriching spiritual reflection and genuine connection. The time not only brought comfort and encouragement to individuals, but also highlighted the importance of intentional, compassionate engagement in public spaces.
“At AYP, our mission is to empower young professionals to live out their faith through service that creates lasting impact. Our mission trips, like the one here in Maryland, are more than just projects — they’re opportunities to bring hope, renewal, and a sense of community to those who need it most,” AYP founder and president Tim Kosaka said. “Whether we’re restoring playgrounds or supporting local outreach, every action we take reflects our commitment to making a tangible difference. I deeply admire and appreciate those who took the time to serve on this mission trip; their dedication embodies who we are as an organization. Together, we show that when we unite to serve, we can inspire change that echoes far beyond the moment.”
A Lasting, Inspiring Impact
By revitalizing a key community space and dedicating time to personal outreach, the team was able to effectively exemplify Christ’s spirit of service and connection. Their efforts will undoubtedly benefit the community for years to come, fostering unity and togetherness in its members and leading more lives to Christ as a result.
“I am deeply grateful for these passionate young adults from AYP who took time off from work, school, and family to travel here and serve our community. Their hard work on the project site, their ministry to the community and church kids in Rockville, the street outreach in DC, and the joyful presence they emitted when we were around them were an inspiration and an example of how to share Jesus’ love with the world,” said Boyan Levterov of Renewal Church in North Bethesda, Maryland. “While mission trips abroad are very valuable, it’s even more inspiring to see the same mission spirit in action — sharing the love of Jesus — right here at home. Thank you, AYP!”
