Amid the harsh, sunbaked expanse of Turkana County in Kenya, where the landscape stretches barren and unforgiving, a powerful new force of hope is emerging. The Lipo Tumaini media evangelistic campaign, launched by the West Kenya Union Conference (WKUC) on January 25, is lighting up this remote region, long plagued by water scarcity, food insecurity, and a lack of essential resources.
The name Lipo Tumaini, meaning “There Is Hope,” resonates deeply with the message behind the campaign. Regional church leaders said that the launch event at the Lodwar Central Seventh-day Adventist Church was a dynamic and uplifting occasion, during which Japheth Ochorokodi delivered a stirring address, Elijah Makhanu inspired the youth, and Emmanuel Mayende shared heartfelt messages of encouragement to the children. This event marked the beginning of a transformative campaign—one that blends spiritual outreach with concrete, life-changing action aimed at improving the lives of Turkana’s people.
At the heart of the Lipo Tumaini initiative is a groundbreaking project: the drilling of a borehole in Napeikar village, an area that has long struggled with a lack of clean water. In partnership with Adventist World Radio and the Turkana County government, WKUC has successfully drilled a borehole that will provide sustainable water to more than 400 families. The sight of fresh, clean water flowing for the first time during the test pumping was a moment of immense joy and relief, regional church leaders said. “It symbolizes a tangible change for a community that has long faced the harsh realities of water scarcity,” they said.
This is just the beginning. Another borehole is set to be constructed in Kakuma, a town facing severe water challenges because of its large refugee population. This additional project will provide much-needed water to even more families, further addressing the region’s critical water shortage.
Beyond water, the Lipo Tumaini campaign is also tackling the pervasive issue of hunger. Trucks loaded with maize, beans, and other essential supplies are on their way to Turkana, delivering vital food aid to communities in desperate need.
Despite the challenges posed by Turkana’s rugged, arid terrain, the Lipo Tumaini campaign is igniting a new sense of optimism in the region. “By fusing faith with action, the initiative is offering a comprehensive solution to some of the area’s most pressing problems,” regional church leaders said. “With each project and every act of service, the campaign is making a lasting impact, empowering the people of Turkana to see beyond their struggles and into a future filled with hope.”
As Lipo Tumaini continues to unfold, regional church leaders emphasize that the initiative “stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when compassion, faith, and determination come together to transform lives.”
